Rita M. Kirkwood
Rita Kirkwood (nee Gertz), 92, of Edgewood, KY, passed away on August 12, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, KY surrounded by her loved ones. She was the ultimate matriarch of her family. Always tending to others when they needed help or guidance with a true servant’s heart. Rita was an active and faithful parishioner of St. Pius X Church in Edgewood, KY for 51 years. She was active in the Diocese of Covington Cursillo Movement, and she enjoyed dancing and playing golf at Summit Hills Country Club. However, the joy of her life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie Gertz; her husband, Ronald Kirkwood; her sisters, Patricia Cain and Mary Moran; her brothers, Charles Gertz, William Gertz, Melvin Gertz, and Thomas Gertz; and her sons-in-law, Stephen Burgess, James Lape, Mitch Layne.
Rita is survived by her sons, David (Beverly) Kirkwood M.D., Michael (Carol) Kirkwood M.D., Mark (Inna) Kirkwood, and Robert (Bonnie) Kirkwood; her daughters, Cynthia (Derek) Thomas, Laurie (Archie Coldiron) Layne, and Patricia (Christopher) Burgess Ebner; and her brothers, Robert Gertz and Anthony Gertz.
She also leaves behind her 30 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Friday, August 18, 2023 from 5:00PM-8:00PM at Linnemann Funeral Homes in Burlington, KY. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 10:00AM at St. Pius X Church in Edgewood, KY. She will be laid to rest at St. Mary Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell, KY.
