LAKESIDE PARK, KY – On December 20, 2018 William (Bill) Martin peacefully departed his earthly life surrounded by his loved ones.  He was 88 years old.  Bill was born to Agnes and William Martin On November 3, 1930, and grew up on the south side of Chicago, just behind the old Union Stock Yards, in the Irish-American neighborhood of Canaryville.  Rather than accept a college football scholarship, Bill joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served aboard the USS Pocono, the personal flagship of the Commander Amphibious Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

Bill began his professional career with IBM and stayed with the company for 36 years, moving his family from Chicago to Detroit to Toledo. His last move with the company brought him to Cincinnati where he was the Business Operations Manager for IBM’s Cincinnati Office.  An adept administrator, Bill took great interest in the careers of his coworkers.  He mentored many new employees and young executives that remained close friends to the end.  Upon retirement, Bill became an avid golfer, playing in the senior league at Devou Park Golf Course for many years. He often joked that golf was his new job and played every week day with his buddies so long as the temperature was above 32 degrees and he could see grass on the fairways.

Bill was a very gracious and giving individual and always made a special effort to help others.  He served as a Big Brother for many years. He cared deeply about the well-being of his friends and neighbors, particularly the elderly and those in need. The lives of those that were touched by Bill were enriched by his thoughtfulness, his selflessness, and his engaging sense of humor.

Bill leaves behind his helpmate and devoted partner of 30 years, Jill Tiedt; his loving brother and faithful friend, John (Jack) Martin (Dona); four loving children whom he adored: Laura Martin, Jeff Martin (Susie), Terry Martin (Gary), Debora Solomon (Lance); seven grandchildren:  Shawn Martin, Jeffrey Martin, Ryan Morris, Nick Allard, Conner Martin, Mecaskey Martin, and Jacob Solomon; and seven great grandchildren.

Bill’s life will be celebrated on January 4, 2019, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2409 Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, 41017. The mass will begin at 10 AM.  Visitation with the family will be held at Linnemann Funeral Home, 30 Commonwealth Ave., Erlanger, Kentucky, 41018, on January 3, 2019, from 6 PM to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of William J. Martin to: Hospice Center of St. Elizabeth, 483 S. Loop Road, Edgewood, Kentucky, 41017, or to UC Barrett Cancer Center, P.O. Box 19970, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45219.
