Susan Jo Humpert Marshall passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Villaspring Healthcare in Erlanger, KY. Susan was born December 11, 1941. Her Parents were Dr. Joseph H. Humpert and Margaret Leslie Humpert. She was raised in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky and graduated from Villa Madonna Academy. She earned a B.A. in French at Marquette University, Milwaukee, with a year abroad at the University of Louvain, Belgium. Susan worked as a French linguist at the National Security Agency in Washington D. C. where she met her husband, Thomas J. Marshall, at a party on Capitol Hill. Tom and Susan were married in July, 1968, and Susan moved around with her husband while he completed his military service, living in Columbus, Ga, Monterey, Calif, Hawaii and Tacoma, Wash. She then moved with him to his home-town, Moberly, Mo, where they lived for the next 37 years. Susan, after leaving the N.S.A., worked at a book store in Hawaii, as a college teacher in Tacoma and as society editor for the Moberly newspaper. Then, after obtaining a master’s degree in counseling psychology at the University of Missouri, she worked as a college counselor. Susan was active in politics. She was a “Kennedy girl” in Wisconsin in 1960, served as a delegate to several Democratic state conventions in Missouri, and was a presidential elector in 1976. Her favorite activity was traveling. She visited most of the states. She snow shoed on Mt. Rainier, backpacked in Alaska, and hiked volcanoes in Hawaii. For a number of years, she visited London for “theatre week” right after Christmas. She was asked for directions in Vienna, and drank some bad rice beer on the Nile. When she realized that she had a terminal illness with an expected course of several years, Susan wanted to return to Northern Kentucky, to be near her family. She and Tom moved to Lakeside Park, where he presently resides. Susan is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Marshall; by three brothers, Edward Humpert of Chattanooga, Tenn. Lawrence Humpert of Fort Mitchell, and Daniel Humpert of Lakeside Park, by a sister, Martha Gustafson of Bridgeport, WV; and by nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Monday, January 20, 2014 from 9 AM to 10 AM with Mass at 10 AM and burial to follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, KY. Memorial donations may be made to the 297 Buttermilk Pike, Ft. Mitchell, KY 41017 or to St. Elizabeth Hospice 483 South Loop Dr. Edgewood, KY 41017
