Ruey A. Newsom, 80, of Erlanger passed away on April 9, 2021. He was first and foremost a teacher, a loving husband, father and grandfather. He taught industrial arts at Hughes High School for 31 years and then at Tichenor Middle School and Lloyd High School for 8 years. He deeply loved mentoring his students and took pride in watching their accomplishments. Ruey was famous for raising prize heirloom tomatoes and they could always be found at the best local places to eat. The stories of fishing and tales from Eastern Kentucky will endure through all of the people who were lucky enough to have met and laughed along with him. He was the owner of Newsom Realty and Construction, former Sunday school teacher and Deacon from Erlanger Baptist Church, and First Church of Christ Burlington Trio Service. He also was a Lloyd High school sports team bus driver for many years and served as the Erlanger city board of adjustment chairman.

Ruey is survived by his wife of 58 years: Joyce Newsom, son: Ruey “Ran” Newsom II, daughter: Lauren (Gerald) Eversole, grandchildren: Kendall and Josh Eversole, brother: Lawrence Newsom, sister: Judith Kinder, beloved cousin: Betty Risner, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Lawrence and Eliza Newsom and sister: Draxie Kirby.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at Erlanger Baptist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 3:00 pm. Burial will be held at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to Gateway Community and Tech College: Construction and Technology Program. Sympathy

Weldon and I send our prayers and sympathy to you Joy, Ran, Lauren, and all the Newsom family. We were saddened to learn of your great loss. Ruey shall always be remembered from our long time friendship and working at Erlanger Baptist. We are thankful for all the good memories we share. Some of the best times somehow involved the old EBC bus driven by Ruey. May you have peace and feel God’s love as you celebrate the life of Ruey. He lived life “large” with a laugh and a twinkle in his eye.
