James P. Daly, 71, of Union, Ky., on July 5 died peacefully in his sleep. He formerly lived in East Hampton, N.Y., and Acton, Mass.

Mr. Daly’s hobbies included playing guitar, singing karaoke, and reading great books. His sister, Nancy Daly, said he will be remembered as a storyteller with a keen sense of humor, and deep love for his dogs Homer, Dylan and Rosie and the Boston Red Sox.

Mr. Daly was born in Boston on Sept. 10, 1949, to Hugh and Helen Daly. He grew up across the U.S. and overseas as an “Army brat.”

Mr. Daly settled in the East End working in the resort industry. He became a certified financial planner and taught at Southampton University. He was a strong advocate of small business development in East Hampton and Montauk. He ran as a candidate for East Hampton Town Supervisor in 1995. In his retirement he pursued a love of creative writing at Harvard University.

He is survived by six siblings, Mary Daly of New York City, Sheila and Nancy Daly of Erlanger, Ky., Kathy Daly of Ely, England, Dr. Eileen Daly of London, England, and Trey Daly of Chicago. He leaves four nephews, Patrick, Sean, Desmond and Griffin, and two nieces, Hannah and Maya.
