Donald S. Jones of Burlington, KY passed away on December 4, 2018 at the age of 87 after a long, brave struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.  Don was a native of Norfolk, Virginia born on September 9, 1931 to Clarence and Elizabeth Jones.  His father’s naval career led the family to homes in Hollywood, CA, Bath, ME, Braintree, MA and Portsmouth, VA where Don attended Craddock High School.  Upon graduating in 1949 Don married his high school sweetheart, Jackie.  He then attended the College of William and Mary before joining the Army where he served in the Airborne Division during the time of the Korean war.

A remarkable 37-year career with Sears, Roebuck and Co. began in 1953.  After starting as a salesman, promotions led to management positions at stores in VA, FL, AL, and regional staff positions for the Southern Territory in both Atlanta and Memphis.  Under Don’s leadership his store in Coral Gables, FL became the highest grossing location in the Sears Corporation.  More corporate success followed, and in 1981 Don was promoted to President of Sears of the Puerto Rico and Panama Corporation.  Then he became head of the Sears New Orleans Region encompassing 32 full line stores and support units, and ultimately the head of Sears Northeast Group, covering the Northeast portion of the United States with 45 full line stores, warehouses and support units. He loved his work and was very proud to have been a part of the glory days of Sears.

In 1989, Don retired to Shalimar, FL where he and Jackie lived for 24 years.  They traveled, enjoyed the Florida panhandle, and together hosted many wonderful gatherings for family and friends in their picturesque home on the bay.  Don was a terrific storyteller and an avid fisherman with boats for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. He began painting and his watercolors are treasured by his family. He also spent many happy moments appreciating the stunning sunsets from his private balcony overlooking the water. Usually with a gin martini and a good cigar.  He always said he was most proud of his children, his grandchildren and his loving wife.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved sister Chloe, and his adored grandson Stephen.  He is survived by Jacqueline, his wife of almost 69 years and his three children: Donna Langford, Donald “Steve”, Jr. (Pier), and Kenneth (Christine). He also leaves seven surviving grandchildren: Eric, Scott, Kyley, Shelby, Haley, Stephanie, and William who know that “Popi” will always be watching over them.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
