Leslie Franklin McGlasson July 27, 1952 – February 6, 2017

On February 6, 2017 Les McGlasson left this earth to join his Heavenly Father. He passed away peacefully in his home in Hebron, Kentucky surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years, Jennifer (Howard) McGlasson; sons Dr. Matthew McGlasson (Margaux) and Dr. Patrick McGlasson (Bethany). He is also survived by his parents, Rodney and Jean McGlasson of Hebron as well as his brother, Lon McGlasson (Ginny). Les will always be known as “Dee” to his 7 wonderful grandchildren, whowerethelightofhislife:Evan,Lillian,Audrey,Charlotte,Isaac,Violet, andIan. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir.

After studying Horticulture at The University of Kentucky, Les returned home to work on the family farm. He farmed full-time for years and then enrolled in Northern Kentucky University where he earned his Master of Arts in Education. “Mr. McGlasson” was a beloved teacher whose legacy will live on through the greenhouses that he helped build for local schools as well as the love of learning that he instilled in thousands of elementary students who were lucky enough to have him. Outside of the classroom, Les coordinated and led countless classes of elementary students on adventures to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Institute at Tremont, where he also served as a resident instructor.

Les was always fascinated with photography, and the beautiful images that he captured of his family and friends will forever be cherished. His nature photographs were featured in official publications of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When he wasn’t using his camera, Les could be found planting flowers, singing with the Northern Kentucky Symphony, hiking with his friends or family, or planning his next adventure.

Les McGlasson was many things to many people; Loving husband, Son, Father, Grandfather, Teacher, Farmer, Photographer, Hiker, Naturalist, Scientist, Mentor, Friend, Dee. He was a “Fearless Leader”, the founding member of the “Hebron Hairdressers”, the “Tomato Man”, as well as the creator of “The Breakfast Club – also known as “The Bad Husbands Club”.

In Memory

To the McGlasson family, as I am sure you are already very aware, Mr. (Les) McGlasson was one of a kind and truly a great soul. I had the privilege of being in his 5th-grade class at Burlington Elementary, and I will forever cherish our class trip to Tremont with my favorite teacher from elementary school. I am halfway through undergraduate school now, and looking back, I only remember two teachers who I felt truly cared for my future and taught me to love learning: a man named Mr. Westfield and another, Mr. McGlasson. I would have never stepped foot into a greenhouse nor grown my own cactus if it wasn’t for this inspiring man. He also sharpened our young minds each day in class with a Scattergories type game involving objects in the classroom. However, by far my favorite memory of him is when my arachnophobia brought me running to him one day in fear of a funky looking spider, and he helped me brave it by taking a lovely photograph to show the zoomed-in, intricate details of the spider (that photograph was hung up on the walls of the school as well). He taught me to truly appreciate nature as well as so many other life lessons. I hope these very random, but very meaningful, stories have brought you some joy in knowing that your relative has made such an impact on at least one of his students. Praying for the McGlasson family and deeply sorry for this loss. – Amanda Hamilton

In Memory

Growing up with and working side by side with Les on the farm, I thought of Les as more than just a friend but more as the older brother that I didn’t have. He was a mentor to me and my love for horticulture comes partly from working and learning from him. I will always remember his great sense of humor.
My deepest sorrow and sympathy go out to his wife and children, and to the whole McGlasson family. He will be greatly missed.
May the Lord bless and comfort you in your time of sorrow.

Sincerely,

Roger Garvey

Deepest sympathy…..

Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Les McGlasson. Les was a special man who touched all of our lives in so many ways……we each have a story, or a memory, of him……our stories, and memories, make us smile, and touch our hearts. I will miss seeing his beautiful nature photographs on Face Book. Rest in peace Les. Arlene S. Tackett

Remembrance message

I have enjoyed knowing the McGlasson family through the years. Les was a great man. I enjoyed hikeing in the Red River Gorge with Les and friends
while Les would stop to photograph unusual plants, regardless of size. Our world would be a much better place with more people like Les McGlasson.
My prayers are with his family while they live with this great loss.
