Ila Marie Herbert

Ila Marie Herbert, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away December 14, 2017 at the age of 94. Ila was born in Macomb, Illinois in 1923 and was a graduate of Rock Island High School. She married Leslie P. Herbert of Tipton, Iowa, in April 1941. During WWII, while Leslie was overseas, she worked in the Rock Island Arsenal. After several years, Ila was able to return to school, and in 1958, at the age of 35 and as a mother of two children, she graduated Summa cum Laude from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri as class Valedictorian with a degree in Elementary Education. She began teaching at St. Peter Catholic School in 1959. In 1961, the family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she taught in public schools for an additional 27 years, retiring in June 1988. A multi-talented woman, Ila enjoyed numerous arts and crafts, was skilled at household repairs, and on occasion, even supplemented the family table by hunting small game. Her life-long love of music and singing was often shared with her church choir and community choral groups. Ila loved her many granddaughters and great-grandchildren, who were a constant source of delight for her. She is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Leslie. Survivors include daughter, Maria of Golden Valley, Minnesota; sons, Randy (Becky) of Union, KY; and Paul of Independence, KY; as well as seven granddaughters and twelve great-grandchildren. A warm, talented and generous woman, Ila will be missed by friends and family alike. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 27^th 5- 7pm at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington, KY. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday, December 28^th at 11:00 am at St. Timothy Catholic Church, Union, KY. Burial will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery , Minneapolis ,Minnesota. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.
